Content Marketing (part 1): Content is King

This is the first of a 2-part article about Content Marketing. Click here for part 2 – Content is not enough.

Content is King yada yada yada. We’ve all heard it. We’ve all preached it to clients. But not everyone understands why. Here, let me tell you.

Imagine being given 100 million Pesos to market an amusement park. Having a huge budget, you go all out. You buy banner ads, bid high in adwords, hold blogger events, buy facebook ads, set up a big seo campaign, and even buy spots in tv, radio, and newspaper. And let’s say it works.  People have been talking about the park and everyone knows about it. So then, people started going. But when they get there, there’s a swing and a slide. It’s nothing but a playground and a bad one at that.

What do you think will happen? Right. People would just leave.

Content, in this case, is anything that you’re offering. It can be a product, a service, an event, information, or even just a great way to pass time (lolcatz, anyone?). It should be something that people want or need. It will not matter how well known you are. If what you’re offering is sub par, people would just go somewhere else.

So, yes, Content is king. It is the foundation of all your marketing efforts. Before spending money on promotions, first make sure that you have something worth promoting.

I understand that there can be arguments for those selling diet pills, acai berries, and knock-offs. But those are scams and shouldn’t really be part of legitimate conversations. Google is working hard to get rid of crap like those. They’ve rolled out a lot of updates and recently even changed their whole algorithm in hummingbird.
